Evidence-based explainers on ammonia, activated carbon, and the chemistry behind litter box smell.

Once you understand why litter smells, you stop wasting money on things that were never going to work. The smell you notice most is ammonia, released as bacteria break down the urea in cat urine. Fragrance does nothing to that reaction. It just stacks a second smell on top of the first, then fades and leaves the original behind. These guides explain the chemistry in plain language, so you can tell real odor control from a nice-smelling label before you buy.
You will find explainers on how activated carbon traps odor at the molecular level, why surface area matters so much that a single gram has a huge hidden reach, and how different litters interact with urine and stool. None of it is academic for its own sake. The point is to help you make better choices in a real litter box. Start with the featured posts for the big picture, then follow the related tags into the specific science you care about, whether that is ammonia, carbon, or fragrance-free setups.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does a litter box smell like ammonia?

Cat urine contains urea. Bacteria in the box break urea down into ammonia gas, which is the sharp smell that stings your nose. The longer waste sits, the more ammonia builds, so controlling it means either removing waste faster or trapping the gas before it spreads.

How does activated carbon trap odor?

Activated carbon is riddled with microscopic pores that give a single gram an enormous internal surface area. Odor molecules stick to that surface and stay there. This is adsorption, not masking, so the smell is held instead of covered.

Does activated carbon add any scent of its own?

No. Activated carbon is fragrance-free. It works by holding odor molecules, so there is nothing to smell from the granules themselves. That makes it a good fit for homes where scented products bother the cat or the people.
